Tampa Bay Devil Rays Tickets continued
1995 - The Devil Rays and the city of Tampa Bay sign a 30 year lease for the team to play their home games at the Thunderdome. Chuck LeMar is named Senior VP of Operations and GM.
1996 - The Devils hold a mini-camp with 24 players, all free-agents signed before the June draft. The ThunderDome is renamed Tropicana Field after the Devil Rays sign a sponsorship deal with Tropicana Dole Beverages. Jamie Reed is appointed head trainer.
1997 - In January, the Devil Rays are officially accepted into the American League. The Devil Rays become the 15th NL franchise. They beat the Phillies 6-0 in the their first ever minor league spring training. The MLB create a 16 team National League and 14 team American League for the 1998 season. The Devil Rays are placed in the AL Eastern Division along with the Orioles, Red Sox, Yankees and Blue Jays. Larry Rothschild is appointed manager. The Devil Rays sign Boston veteran Wade Boggs which immediately boosts Tampa Bay Devil Rays ticket sales.
1998 - In the first exhibition game at Tropicana Field, the Rays beat Atlanta 5-0 to a crowd of 26,519. The first victory for the team is an 11-8 win over Detroit. It is Rolando Arrojo's first MLB game. The first away game victory is against the White Sox with a 5-1 win at Comisky Park. Raymond the team mascot is debuted. Rookie Rolando Arrojo is appointed to the AL All-Star Team. The Rays sign Jose Canseco again boosting sales of Tampa Bay Devil Rays tickets.
1999 - Wade Boggs becomes the first MLB player to reach 3000 hits with a home-run at Tropicana Field. Several months later he announces his retirement. Boggs later becomes the Devil Rays hitting coach.
2000 - Fred McGriff becomes the 31st player in MLB history to reach 400 career home runs.
2001 - The Devil Rays unveil new uniforms. Manager Larry Rothschild is replaced by bench coach Hal McRae. Wade Boggs resigns as hitting coach.
2002 - The Devil Rays begin the season with a 3 game sweep of the Detroit Tigers at Tropicana Field. The team go on to lose a record 15 games in a row later in the month. Joe Kennedy throws a shutout to beat the Mariners in Seattle.
