p>When the Athletics francise began, they were dubbed the "A"s almost immediately by local sports writers. The team was also often referred to as "Mack-men" in honor of longtime owner Connie Mack. Mack managed the team from 1901 to 1950. During this time period, the A's won 5 World Series and 4 AL Championships. Throughout his career, Mack managed the A's for a record 7,755 games. That's one record that's not likely to ever be beaten!
In 1901, New York Giants Manager John McGraw referred to the A's as "The White Elephants", referring to what he percieved as money Mack wasted on his players. Mack ironically adopted the White Elephant as the team insignia and went on to win the American League pennant in 1902. The logo was an iconic A's symbol until 1928.
The 80's were a highlight decade for the A's. During his time with the A's, left fielder Rickey Henderson became a bonifide phenomenon. He served four stints with the A's, 1979-1984, 1989-1993, 1994-1995, and 1998. He holds the all-time record for steals and won the AL MVP award as an Athletic in 1990.
