Detroit Tigers Continued

Legend has it that the tigers were named after the orange striped socks the Detroit team wore in the early 1900's. Since the team's inception, the Tigers have had one of the best records in the American League with 62 of their first 100 seasons ending with a winning record.

1905 - The legendary Ty Cobb is traded to the Tigers from Augusta of the Sally League in exchange for pitcher Eddie Cicotte and $700. Detroit Tigers ticket sales are modest compared to today's standards.

1907 - Frank Navin (who was hired as the Tigers bookkeeper in 1902) aquires a half interest ownership and becomes team president.

1911 - Ty Cobb has a personal best batting average of .420.

1912 - The Tigers move to their new ballpark in efforts to accomodate their growing popularity. The following seasons set new attendance records as Detroit Tigers tickets sell like never before.

1915 - The Tigers rack up a regular season record but fall to the Red Sox (with Babe Ruth on the roster) and the Sox claim the pennant.

1934 - The Tigers win the first of two consecutive league pennants.

1935 - The Tigers win the World Series. Sales of Detroit Tigers tickets soar once more.

1945 - The Tigers hit a late season winning streak, barely winning the pennant. They go on to edge out the Cubs and win the World Series in seven games.

1960 - John Fetzer purchases the Tigers and becomes president.

1979 - Sparky Anderson assumes managerial reigns for the next 16 seasons.

1984 - Tigers win the World Series. They also have record attendance at 2,704,794.

1992 - Mike llitch purchased sole interest in the team from Tom Monoghan.

1995 - President and CEO John McHale is hired.

1999 - The historic Tiger Stadium is retired.

2000 - Comerica Park is the home of the Detroit Tigers.
